Meta Ray-Ban glasses for blind users can read short printed text aloud, describe what is in front of you, make hands-free calls, and connect you to a sighted Be My Eyes volunteer. The AI can be wrong, and the glasses do not help you navigate, so treat them as a helper rather than a replacement for a cane or guide dog.
AI glasses are now a real option for blind and low-vision people, but the claims around them run ahead of what they can do today. This guide covers what Meta Ray-Ban glasses do well, where they fall short, how Be My Eyes works on them, what they cost in India, the US and the UK, and who should buy them or wait. I have used Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and this guide combines that use with Meta’s own pages, Be My Eyes and published reviews. Let’s get started.
Do Meta Ray-Ban glasses help blind people?
Yes, for specific tasks. Ray-Ban Meta glasses look like ordinary glasses. They have a camera in the frame, speakers by your ears, microphones, and a button on the arm. You speak to Meta AI with “Hey Meta” and the answer is spoken into your ear. Nothing needs to be held, which is the main reason I reach for them instead of my phone.
Reading text, menus and mail
Ask Meta AI to read what you are looking at. In my use, labels, menus, signs and envelopes worked best in good light. Long documents, small print and shiny or curved packaging were less reliable. If the first try fails, move closer, add light and ask again.
Describing scenes and finding things
You can ask what is in front of you, what colour an item is, or what a product is. I treat every answer as a good guess, not a fact. The AI can miss objects, misjudge distance, or describe something wrongly with confidence.
Calls, messages and music
Calls, messages and music work by voice. These were the most dependable features for me, because they do not depend on the AI interpreting a scene.
Controls, the capture button and the LED
The capture button on the arm takes photos and video. A small LED lights when the camera is recording, so people nearby can tell. Touch controls on the arm handle volume and playback. Learn them by feel indoors before relying on them outside.
Does Be My Eyes work on Meta glasses?
Yes. Be My Eyes is a free service that connects blind and low-vision people with sighted volunteers by video call. On Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses, the volunteer sees through the glasses camera instead of your phone camera, so your hands stay free. It does not work on first-generation Ray-Ban Stories.
How to start a Be My Eyes call on Meta glasses
Set up Be My Eyes in the Meta AI app, then say “Hey Meta, Be My Eyes” or ask it to call a volunteer. A volunteer answers and sees what the glasses see.
What a volunteer can and cannot do
The camera sits on the left of the frame, with a field of view of about 70 degrees horizontally and 86 degrees vertically. Volunteers cannot zoom or switch cameras, so turn your head slowly and describe what you need. Volunteers can help with expiry dates, forms, dropped items and colour matching. Do not use them for crossing roads or any safety-critical decision.
Switching between glasses and phone
Double-tap the capture button to move the camera, microphone and speakers between the glasses and your phone. Use this if a call is not working well on the glasses.
Privacy on Be My Eyes calls
Snapshots taken during a call are deleted afterwards, but a stranger can see what your camera sees while you are connected. I avoid showing bank cards, passwords or medical records. Be My AI, the app’s AI option, is available if you prefer not to speak to a person.
Language support
Volunteers speak many languages, but Meta AI’s own language support varies by country. Check the Meta AI app for your language before buying.
What works well
Hands-free access is the biggest benefit. You can ask a question without taking out a phone, unlocking it and aiming a camera.
Quick, small tasks work well. Reading a label, checking a colour, or confirming which door is which are jobs where an approximate answer is enough.
The glasses are also discreet. They look like normal glasses, which I prefer to holding up a phone in public.
Battery is workable for a day out. Gen 2 is rated at up to 8 hours and Gen 3 at up to 9 hours, with the case adding roughly 48 and 50 hours. Heavy camera and AI use drains them faster.
Where Meta glasses fall short for blind and low-vision users
Wrong or invented answers
Meta AI sometimes misreads text, invents details or misses obstacles. I would never rely on it for medicine labels, allergy information or dosage. Confirm with another source.
No obstacle detection
The glasses do not detect steps, kerbs or traffic. They do not replace a white cane, a guide dog or orientation and mobility training.
A phone and a connection are required
Most AI features depend on the Meta AI app and a data connection. In a basement, a rural area or on a weak network, they may do very little.
People recognition
Do not plan around the glasses telling you who is in front of you. Sources disagree on how far face labelling is available, and privacy rules differ by country.
Meta glasses vs phone apps and dedicated devices
A phone running Be My Eyes or Seeing AI can already do much of this, often with a better camera and a bigger screen for low-vision users. Google Lookout is Android only. The glasses add hands-free use, not new intelligence. For phone options, see my guide to the best apps for blind and visually impaired people, and for documents, the reading apps guide.
| Option | Best for | Hands-free | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta glasses | Everyday questions, short reading, calls | Yes | AI can be wrong, needs a phone. |
| Phone with Be My Eyes or Seeing AI | Documents and detailed description | No | You must hold the phone. |
| Dedicated devices such as Envision Glasses or OrCam MyEye | Reading and recognition built for blind users | Yes | Cost considerably more, fewer general features. |
Try the free phone apps first. If you keep wishing for free hands, that is when the glasses are worth considering.
Meta Ray-Ban glasses price in India, the US and the UK
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is now available in India from about INR 44,300. Gen 2, which launched on 1 December 2025, starts from about INR 39,900 and is sometimes discounted, according to Digit. Final price depends on frame, lens and configuration, and prescription lenses cost extra.
Gen 3 adds a six-microphone array, a dedicated Action Button, adjustable temple tips and new frame styles. I found no accessibility-specific upgrades in the sources I checked, so the core Meta AI and Be My Eyes experience is the same as on Gen 2.
Detailed scene responses began in the US and Canada in May 2025. Whether they are fully live in India is not confirmed, so ask the seller and test the feature within the return window.
In the US, prices run from roughly $300 to $379 depending on model, according to ABILITY Magazine. In the UK, they run from £299 to £379, according to Guide Dogs UK. Prices change often, so check the official store before buying.
Free Meta glasses for blind veterans and other programmes
In the United States, Meta is donating Ray-Ban AI glasses to legally blind veterans through the Blinded Veterans Association, which takes requests at bva.org/glasses. Android Central reports the programme but gives no number of glasses or deadline, so check the BVA page for current terms.
Elsewhere, ask blind associations, assistive technology grant schemes and employers about funding. An employer may cover the glasses as a workplace adjustment if you can show a clear work use.
How to set up Meta glasses with a screen reader
- Charge the glasses and case fully.
- Turn on VoiceOver or TalkBack on your phone before opening the Meta AI app. If you are new to VoiceOver, start with my VoiceOver tips for iPhone.
- Install the Meta AI app and pair the glasses over Bluetooth, with a sighted helper if needed. My guide to setting up a phone for a blind or low-vision person covers the phone side.
- Set your language and check that Meta AI answers in it.
- Install and sign in to Be My Eyes, then link it to the glasses in the Meta AI app.
- Practise “Hey Meta” and the capture button indoors.
- Test a Be My Eyes call on a low-stakes task, such as reading a food label, before depending on it outside.
Are Meta Ray-Ban glasses for blind users worth it?
Buy them if you want hands-free reading of short text, quick questions and calls, you already use a phone screen reader, and you accept that answers can be wrong.
Wait if you need reliable navigation, depend on perfect accuracy for medicine or safety, have poor mobile data, or have not yet tried the free phone apps.
If you are unsure, try the glasses in a shop and ask about a return window.
