The best voice assistants for blind users are usually the ones built into the phone you already use. Siri is built into iPhone, Gemini has replaced Google Assistant on Android phones and tablets, Alexa suits a smart home and comes with the VoiceView screen reader on Echo Show screens, and Bixby suits Samsung Galaxy owners. All four changed in 2026, so older advice about them is often out of date. Test any assistant with your own screen reader before you rely on it.
Which voice assistant suits which situation
On an iPhone, use Siri, which is built in. On an Android phone, use Gemini, which now answers when you hold the power button. At home, use Alexa if your smart home is built around Echo devices, or Gemini for Home if you already own Nest speakers and displays. On a Samsung Galaxy phone, Bixby changes phone settings from plain requests, and Galaxy AI can also use Gemini and Perplexity.
How I use them every day
I use all four of these assistants every day. On my Android phone I now use Gemini, and it is better for searching the web directly from the phone. Google Assistant was better at controlling the phone itself, and that is where Gemini still falls short for me. On my iPhone, the current Siri answers and ends calls by voice and controls the phone effectively, and I find it very accessible. I have not tried the new Siri AI beta yet.
Voice assistants for blind users: what changed in 2026
This is where each assistant stands in October 2026, based on the companies’ own announcements wherever they exist.
Google Assistant is now Gemini on Android
Google began removing Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and Android Auto on September 4, 2026, and Gemini replaces it, according to 9to5Google. Once it is removed you cannot switch back, and a late-September check by 9to5Google found the Gemini app no longer offers a Switch to Google Assistant shortcut. Cars with Google built-in keep Assistant. That change did not cover Nest speakers and displays, where Google says Gemini for Home will replace Assistant on existing devices.
Google describes Gemini for Home as a voice assistant that can play media across streaming services, handle several smart home commands at once, and help with calendar events, lists and timers.
For blind and low-vision users, Gemini Live has a Guided Vision feature. When you share your phone camera, Gemini describes your surroundings, answers follow-up questions and gives spoken prompts to help you aim the camera. It works with TalkBack, needs Android 9 or later, and is rolling out gradually where Gemini Live is supported. Turn on Use guided vision in Live in the Gemini app settings, then open the TalkBack menu with a three-finger tap and choose Guided vision, as Google’s accessibility help explains. Google says it can make mistakes and is not for navigation or obstacle detection.
Siri AI on iPhone
Apple began rolling out Siri AI as an English beta on September 14, 2026 with iOS 27. Apple describes it as more conversational, with personal context and awareness of what is on the screen. It can search your messages, emails and photos and take actions in apps, and it has a dedicated Siri app. Google and Apple said in a joint statement on January 12, 2026 that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology, and Apple says Apple Intelligence keeps running on devices and Private Cloud Compute. That puts Gemini technology behind Apple’s own models, not a separate Gemini app inside Siri.
You join a waitlist from Settings, Siri, Try Siri AI (Beta), and it downloads when your wait ends, as Apple’s support page describes. It needs an iPhone 15 Pro or later, an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone Air. Your device language and Siri language must both be English for now, and Siri AI is not available on iPhone in the EU or with an Apple Account in mainland China. Apple also says Siri AI is not available to users under 13, that server-side features have daily usage limits, and that expanded access will cost a fee in future.
Siri can also handle calls by voice. When the phone rings, you can say Siri, answer the call, or answer call on speaker. To end a call, turn on Call Hangup in Settings under Siri & Search, then ask Siri to hang up while you are on speaker or headphones, and the caller hears you give the command. Announce Calls in the same settings makes Siri say who is calling. These features work on iPhone 11 or newer, and on older iPhones with AirPods or Beats, according to AppleInsider’s guide.
With Siri AI you can always type to Siri by swiping down from the center of the screen and typing in the Search or ask field, according to Apple’s guide to using Siri. Apple’s accessibility page also lists settings for how fast Siri speaks and how long it waits before responding. The National Federation of the Blind’s review of iOS 27 calls Siri AI a significant upgrade that can read the screen to help with inaccessible apps, but the reviewer also found bugs, including reading only a summary of appointments and asking for extra confirmation on first calls. AppleVis lists two Siri app bugs in its iOS 27 testing, including an Open in App button that does not respond to a double tap. Apple’s own pages do not describe how Siri AI behaves with VoiceOver, so test it before you rely on it.
Alexa+ and Echo devices
Alexa+ is Amazon’s newer, AI-based version of Alexa. Amazon says it is rolling out country by country, starting in the US and since reaching places including Canada, the UK, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Brazil, Australia and, from September 16, 2026, India. Early access is often by invitation, and pricing and languages differ by country, so check Amazon’s page for yours. I do not have access to Alexa+ myself, so I have not tested it with a screen reader.
VoiceView is Amazon’s screen reader, and Amazon lists it on Fire TV devices, Fire tablets, Echo Show devices and, through a connected Bluetooth device, Kindle devices. Bixby and Galaxy AI on Samsung phones
Samsung introduced a new Bixby with One UI 8.5 in February 2026. It works as a chat-style assistant that changes device settings from plain-language requests, so you do not need to know the exact setting name, and it can search the web and show results inside Bixby. It is available in select markets, including Germany, India, South Korea, Poland, the UK and the US, and it needs a Samsung Account and a data connection.
Samsung also added Perplexity as an agent in Galaxy AI, activated by saying Hey Plex or holding the side button, with the Perplexity app preinstalled on Galaxy S26 series phones. Samsung’s announcement does not discuss accessibility, so test Bixby with your screen reader.
Voice assistants versus AI chat apps
Many blind users also talk to AI apps for longer questions. Limits to know
Siri AI is a beta with a waitlist, available in English only and not in the EU on iPhone, so many readers cannot use it yet. Google Assistant is disappearing from Android, so tutorials written for it may no longer match what you see. Samsung notes that Bixby recognition can vary with pronunciation, voice level and background noise, and that features differ by country and language. Guided Vision is not meant for navigation, so keep using your cane, guide dog or a navigation app. Check any answer that involves money, health or travel with a second source.
