Safety Before Relying on Any Travel App
GPS arrival notifications can be off by several meters. In some environments, that error can place you beside, or even within, a roadway. Treat “you have arrived” as approximate, not confirmation you’re standing somewhere safe.
AI tools like Seeing AI and Gemini can also misidentify or invent details. Don’t use them to judge traffic, platform edges, or anything safety-critical, and neither Gemini nor ChatGPT is built for real-time navigation.
Cane skills and orientation and mobility training come first, apps fill in afterward. I prefer bone-conduction or open-ear headphones for spoken navigation, recommended by both Guide Dogs UK and the Perkins School for the Blind, since they leave my ears available for traffic and cane feedback. Before I ever open Gemini in a hotel room, I walk it myself first, no counting, no special technique, just getting a rough sense of where things are. The app is the detailed check that follows, not the first step.

Solves what GPS can’t, finding the exact bus stop. Developed by Massachusetts Eye and Ear, it detects bus stop signage by camera from up to 50 feet away. In a Boston field study, 91% success versus 52% for Google Maps alone. It’s a micro-navigation tool, not a full transit app. You need to already know your route.
Crosswalk Assistance

Identifies a pedestrian signal’s status through your camera and gives audio and haptic feedback, entirely offline. It identifies the signal, but it doesn’t confirm the road is actually clear, so it still requires listening to traffic and cane technique.
